South Carolina Energy & Gas (SCE&G) will hire 1,000 workers over the course of this year as part of a large, ongoing project for two new nuclear reactors. According to a report from the Aiken Standard, SCE&G currently has 3,500 workers employed in Jenkinsville at the company’s VC Summer plant for construction of the reactors. The company expects that number to increase to 4,500 by the end of this year. The additional workers are being brought on in order to finish the reactors on time. The first of the reactors is expected to come on line in August 2019 with the second in 2020. And because the reactors will be expected to operate for at least 60 years, the company says it wants to hire younger workers. To do that, and to find enough skilled construction workers, SCE&G has worked with schools across the state to fill welding, architectural and other trades positions. The company is even “reaching out to grade school teachers and students” about the upcoming job opportunities. A progress video on construction of the reactors from October is below.
