Peru’s gold reserves are world’s sixth largest, mining chamber says

Peru’s gold reserves are the world’s sixth largest at roughly 2,800 metric tons, equal to around 5 percent of the global total, Peru’s National Mining, Petroleum and Energy Society, or SNMPE, said Thursday.

The mining chamber used data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

It said Peru also ranked sixth in gold production in 2015 with output of 145 tons, or 4.8 percent of the worldwide total.

China’s gold production was the highest last year at 490 tons, followed by Australia, which had 300 tons of output and a world-high 9,100 metric tons of reserves of that precious metal.

The current state of the global gold mining industry will be analyzed at the 12th International Gold and Silver Symposium, a biennial event that will bring together experts in the field from May 17-18 in Lima. EFE
